In fact, it\u2019s actually more likely to push customers towards competitors who have spent the time and money to properly connect with their audience.<gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/gwmw><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To localize your website for multiple languages the right way, follow the steps below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Timing Is Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting your timing right is important. On one hand, you don\u2019t want to be so meticulous that it takes you years to launch your site. On the other, it\u2019s a mistake to rush to the extent that you are left with multiple errors and pages that won\u2019t load properly after launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalmarketinginstitute.com\/blog\/2017-11-07-11-web-design-trends-to-watch-in-2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coding and design trends<\/a>\u00a0change quickly in our digital world; take too long to build your site and you may be left with one that is incompatible with new advancements.<gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/gwmw><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engage your stakeholders early on. Copywriters, translators, coders, and designers all need time to build a site that connects with multiple audiences and retains the core messages of your brand. Keep Your Global Audience Central to Your Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding your audience is key to designing a website that works for them. You need a firm grasp of current business needs, such as where your customers come from and what are their&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/buyer-persona-definition-under-100-sr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buyer personas<\/a>. This enables you to effectively engage with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, to avoid re-building your website just months after launch, you should also be aware of the markets you are aiming to break into in the near future. Keep track of what language they speak and even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalagencynetwork.com\/marketing-holidays-culturally-diverse-audience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relevant holidays<\/a>&nbsp;that might affect sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t know the answers, you\u2019ll need to carry out some research. This means optimizing the entire user experience so where they are visiting from doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Create Space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of whether or not you begin the translation work straight away, you should be making room for localization \u2013 literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each language requires a different amount of space to say the same thing, whether it\u2019s due to a difference in character size or related to the number of words it takes to describe something. As a rule of thumb, French, German, and Portuguese take up roughly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/International\/articles\/article-text-size\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30% more space<\/a>&nbsp;than English, while other languages take up different amounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other considerations such as text direction \u2013 left to right versus right to left or even vertical configurations \u2013 will also need to be thought through. This will help you avoid content, banners, and CTA\u2019s appearing broken or unattractive to users in other languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Consider Imagery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Images on your website present two very different problems. Not all\u00a0pictures and especially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webdesignerdepot.com\/2012\/06\/color-and-cultural-design-considerations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">colors<\/a>\u00a0are interpreted the same across cultures. Images can also have a dramatic effect on the load time for your site pages.<gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/gwmw><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be selective when choosing images for your website, as not all will be appropriate for every audience. Keeping them to a minimum will help to decrease your website\u2019s load time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Use Unicode<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unicode is standard across the computer industry and while it\u2019s not perfect, it does enable regular depiction of text, regardless of language. By using\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/unicode.org\/standard\/WhatIsUnicode.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unicode characters<\/a>\u00a0for all languages you intend to cater for, you are covered by well over a hundred thousand characters which span ninety different scripts.<gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/gwmw><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UTF-8 is the most common character-encoding for Unicode and is becoming the default encoding system for both email and websites. By adopting it for your own website build, you are ensuring your pages are compatible with almost any language.<gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/gwmw><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Hreflang Tags<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/hreflang-ultimate-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hreflang tags<\/a>&nbsp;are the way you let search engines know your site has similar content in multiple languages, enabling them to direct users to the correct version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are various ways in which you can use hreflang tags. You can include them in HTML link elements within headers, HTTP headers, or from your Sitemap. Each of these has different uses, so it is worth reading on the subject to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/learn\/seo\/hreflang-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decide which method<\/a>&nbsp;will best suit your localization needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. The Need For Speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most search engines take into account your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/serps.com\/library\/how-to-measure-your-website-speed-and-load-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website\u2019s load speed<\/a>\u00a0when ranking you in their results pages.<gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/gwmw><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google wants sites to load in less than a second. It can seem an impossible task to control your site\u2019s load speed when internet speeds across the world vary so widely. Fortunately, that\u2019s not the case; it is possible and what\u2019s more, it\u2019s relatively easy to ensure you are not penalized for load times across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a Content Delivery Network (CDN) will improve load times and the customer\u2019s experience on your site, something that is especially important for e-commerce. CDNs can be expensive, but the return in terms of streamlining customer purchasing experiences and SERPs makes the investment well worth it.
